BTT & DOT

"I’ve always wondered what other people do when they come across a word/phrase that they’ve never heard before. I mean, do they jot it down on paper so they can look it up later, or do they stop reading to look it up on the dictionary/google it or do they just continue reading and forget about the word?"
Typically, I think about the contextual use of the word and note any similarities to other words and root words that could "unlock" it. If I want to ascertain the specific meaning, I jot the word in my reading journal or the inside cover of the book and continue reading. Usually, it makes sense even though I don't know the exact meaning.

Unable to find the water in the hot tub (It was just there! I saw it!), Lailah decides to perch on her favorite outdoor spot.

All is quiet in the back yard. Lailah is satisfied with her watch duties and takes a moment of rest. Her normal standing position allows her to survey the bunnies, squirrels, and birds who normally keep her quite busy with jumping down from her perch, running across the deck to the grass, chasing bunnies, birds, and -- of course---treeing the squirrels. Her perch position affords a view over the back yard fence to bark at any movement she spies. Her bark has gotten much LOUDER, by the way. It remains rather high-pitched, giving it a piercing quality. yep.

Being a dog who enjoys perches, Lailah has several ideal locations in the house. The bay window in the living room is a favorite, serving much as the hot tub perch. The difference is that the barking, running, and chasing does take place within the house since she cannot get out to the deck and yard. Is it any wonder that I pretty much know where she is at all times---except when she's getting into something forbidden!

Max sleeps. I am going to keep my camera on my person to capture Max in action---standing, eating, playing with Lailah. It happens.

I think you've raised a very interesting point here. Back in the days when everyone had an education in Classical languages it was probably much easier for people to work out what words meant using their knowledge of Latin and Greek. These days not so many of us have that resource to call on.

Lailah is so much like my Grover, except she's so much smaller. Must watch out for the evil squirrels and bunnies and birds. I kinda like Max's approach.

They always are quiet when in the forbidden stuff aren't they?
Great pictures!

I love that she perches on the hot tub! My Remy wouldn't mind that, but Payton would be terrified!

As for words...if I'm online or my computer is on/accessible, I'll just google or online dictionary them. If none of the above holds true, I usually just try to contextualize and go on.

I'm finding, however, that there are many words that I know the "idea" of, but can't really give a good definition when pressed. I must contextualize a heck of a lot when I read. :-)

Lailah is a good watchpuppy. Max is too funny (reminds me of Charlotte).

If Lailah is anything like my Roscoe, you must get really tired of the constant alerting on things she sees outside and racing through the house telling everyone about it. Our sunroom windows go all the way to the floor and Roscoe gets a sweeping view of everything -- at least until the leaves grow in. It's bark, bark, bark all the time. I'll be much happier when the leaves come in and he can't see as much.

If they could talk... I notice often what you are reading and would like to comment on it or have you comment. Pooch. What are your thoughts on the book "The Way Men Think"? I am a slow reader and like to read, but do not like books that have bad words in them, questionable morals, or a very poor plot. It seems as though I may truly trust your judgement and suggestion. I do not get out too often to the bookstore and am limiting myself now on bookshelf space. I appreciate Austin, of course, many classics, and Anne Tyler is my favorite author. Also really like Francine Rivers and Ted Dekker, C.S. Lewis. My two favorite books of all are To Kill A Mockingbird and Charlotte's Web. Pooch~suggestions for me? P.S. Did you crochet that great looking afghan on the rocker?
